LAHORE: Digitalization of the agriculture sector is the need of the modern era as advanced technologies can enable timely and effective agricultural advisory services for farmers, said Punjab Minister for Agriculture Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani.
He was chairing an important meeting at the Civil Secretariat, Lahore, to review proposals for the use of modern digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced digital models to support farmers and strengthen agricultural services. Secretary Agriculture Punjab Shakeel Ahmad Mian also attended the meeting.
During the meeting, the Minister for Agriculture Punjab briefed on an advanced mobile application developed by Syngenta Pakistan for crops. It was informed that digitalization of the agriculture sector is a need of the modern era and advanced technologies can enable timely and effective agricultural advisory services for farmers.
Addressing the meeting, Kirmani said digitalization of agriculture is a key component of the ongoing agricultural transformation agenda. He emphasized the need to make farmer advisory services more effective and results-oriented by leveraging modern digital technologies. He added that the advanced mobile application would also help obtain data on crop growth and other important agricultural indicators.
Secretary Agriculture Punjab Shakeel Ahmad Mian said modern digital technologies would further improve the diagnosis of crop diseases. Effective use of digital technology would facilitate the timely detection of crop diseases and enable farmers to receive appropriate guidance. He said promoting modern digital agricultural technologies through public-private partnerships could make the process of farmer advisory services more effective. For this purpose, the government would make full use of modern applications and AI-based technologies.
The meeting also reviewed various proposals for leveraging advanced AI models in the agriculture sector and providing farmers with modern agricultural information in line with contemporary requirements.
