KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Labour, Human Resources and Social Security Saeed Ghani on Monday once again categorically rejected calls for creating another province in Sindh as all major political parties in Sindh do oppose any such move.
“There will be no second province in Sindh. I am ready to give it in writing,” Ghani told reporters after inaugurating an English-medium model school established by the Korangi Town Municipal Corporation.
He said those advocating the division of Sindh had little understanding of the Sindh’s history, geography and political realities.
He said the Pakistan Peoples Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz were all expected to oppose any attempt to create another province in Sindh.
“There is a consensus among political parties in Sindh that there is no need for another province,” he said.
Ghani criticised a small group of politicians advocating the division of Sindh.
They might have their own political interests but should not use the issue to create hatred among people, he cautioned.
He said political stability and unity were particularly important at a time when Pakistan was facing economic difficulties.
“Sindh has achieved unity after a long time,” he said, urging political forces to avoid statements that could undermine that unity.
Referring to Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s leader Mustafa Kamal, Ghani said Kamal had acknowledged that people in Sukkur did not want a separate province.
He recalled that the PPP government had agreed with the MQM in 2012-13 on amendments to the local government system, but the changes were withdrawn after widespread opposition in Sindh, including demands from PPP lawmakers.
Ghani said the local government amendments and the creation of a new province were entirely different issues.
“If the PPP had even considered creating another province in Sindh, the reaction would have been far greater than the reaction to the local government amendments,” he said.
Responding to a question about remarks by Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi regarding the creation of additional provinces, Ghani questioned his authority to decide the issue of Sindh.
Ghani also criticised Jamaat-e-Islami for staging protests and sit-ins at multiple locations in Karachi, saying the demonstrations caused inconvenience to ordinary citizens.
He said the party claimed to be protesting for relief from inflation and high fuel prices but its road blockades forced commuters to consume additional fuel and face unnecessary hardship.
“I fail to understand how blocking roads in Karachi and creating difficulties for citizens will put pressure on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif,” he questioned.
Ghani appealed to Jamaat-e-Islami leader Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, whom he described as an educated person, to adopt a more constructive approach to protests.
Earlier, Ghani inaugurated the TMC English Medium Model School at the Shaheed Najeeb Ahmed Campus in Korangi and inspected its facilities.
He acknowledged that town municipal corporations faced resource constraints but praised Korangi Town for undertaking educational and community development initiatives, including an IT institute, parks, sports grounds and other facilities.
He said such initiatives were consistent with the vision of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
“Quality education and healthcare are among the foremost needs of the people,” Ghani said, urging residents to take ownership of the school and help ensure its proper maintenance.
He said the Sindh government had undertaken extensive development projects in Korangi district and that further work was continuing.
Sindh Chief Minister’s Special Assistant for Katchi Abadis Syed Najmi Alam said the PPP considered Korangi its own constituency and rejected the perception that the party neglected predominantly Urdu-speaking areas of Karachi.
He said development work carried out by the town administration and the provincial government in Korangi was evidence of the PPP’s commitment to the area.
Korangi Town Chairman Muhammad Naeem Sheikh and other PPP leaders and local representatives attended the inauguration.
