LAHORE: At least 29 people have lost their lives and 203 others sustained injuries across Punjab since the onset of the current monsoon season due to rain-related incidents, including the collapse of dilapidated houses, lightning strikes and electrocution, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
The PDMA, in its latest damage assessment report issued on Sunday, said the monsoon rains had also partially damaged 52 houses and caused the death of six livestock across the province.
Director General PDMA Umar Abbas Mela directed all district administrations to remain on high alert as the third spell of monsoon rains continues, warning of the risk of urban flooding and flash floods in vulnerable areas.
He said that, in line with the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the injured were being provided with the best possible medical treatment, while financial assistance ranging from Rs1 million to Rs5 million was being extended to the families of those who lost their lives under the provincial government’s compensation policy.
The DG PDMA also instructed deputy commissioners to ensure strict enforcement of Section 144 along rivers, streams and flood-prone waterways to discourage public access during the ongoing wet spell.
He urged the citizens to adopt precautionary measures, avoid living in unsafe and dilapidated buildings, and remain vigilant during heavy rainfall. He noted that the highest number of fatalities had resulted from the collapse of old and structurally weak buildings.
Parents were also advised to keep children away from electric poles, exposed power lines and low-lying areas where rainwater accumulates, as precautionary measures could significantly reduce the risk of loss of life and property.
