LAHORE:Punjab Secretary of Agriculture Iftikhar Ali Sahoo has said that according to field reports, the cotton crop situation across Punjab is highly encouraging, reflecting positive prospects for achieving the province’s production targets this season.
He was chairing a meeting on the current cotton situation at the Agriculture House here on Saturday.
The meeting was attended by the Additional Secretary (Task Force) of Punjab, Muhammad Shabbir Ahmad Khan, Directors General Agriculture Chaudhry Abdul Hameed and Naveed AsmatKahloon, along with senior departmental officers.
Dr. Muhammad Anjum Ali, Director General of Research, Pest Warning, and Directors Agriculture (Extension) from Bahawalpur, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan divisions participated through video link.
Reviewing the crop situation, the Secretary of Agriculture directed field formations to further strengthen coordination with the Irrigation Department to ensure timely availability of water in accordance with crop requirements.
He stressed that agriculture officers should utilize their professional expertise to provide farmers with effective guidance on cotton crop management.
He also directed that advice be issued in line with local conditions and the different growth stages of the cotton crop to help farmers maximize productivity.
Sahoo further instructed officials to closely monitor fertilizer markets to ensure the availability of fertilizers at government-notified prices.
He also ordered strict action against individuals involved in the adulteration and illegal trade of agriculture pesticides.
The Secretary of Agriculture said that all available resources were being mobilized to ensure that cotton production not only met the targets set for the current season but exceeded them as well.
