ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has summoned separate sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate today (Wednesday) ahead of the presentation of the Federal Budget for the fiscal year 2026–27.

The President has convened the National Assembly session at 5:00 p.m., while the Senate session has been scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on the same day.

According to sources, the Budget for the fiscal year 2026–27 is expected to be presented in the National Assembly and laid before the Senate on Friday (June 12) for discussion. The sources said the government may introduce legislation within the next two days before presenting the Budget 2026–27 in Parliament. They added that the proposed legislation is reportedly aimed at providing legal cover for retaining around Rs1.1 trillion to Rs1.2 trillion from the provinces’ shares under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award.

According to the sources, the federal government is considering retaining this amount from the provincial shares for strategic expenditures and federal development projects, a move that has created uncertainty ahead of the Budget 2026–27.

The sessions have been called by the President in exercise of the powers conferred under Clause (1) of Article 54 of the Constitution of Pakistan. Earlier, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that a summary had been sent to the President for convening separate sessions of the National Assembly and the Senate on Wednesday, while the Federal Budget for the fiscal year 2026–27 is likely to be presented on Friday, June 12. In a post on social media, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that a summary had been forwarded for convening separate sessions of both Houses of Parliament.

According to the minister’s post, “A summary has been forwarded for convening the sessions of both Houses of Parliament. It has been proposed that the National Assembly session be held on June 10 at 5:00 p.m., while the Senate session be convened on the same day at 4:00 p.m. The Federal Budget is expected to be presented on June 12.”
