KARACHI: Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will develop a mangroves and biodiversity park, and learning centre along China Creek as part of efforts to strengthen environmental conservation, climate resilience and eco-tourism.
Making this announcement during his visit to the proposed site on Saturday, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab said the project launched by KMC aimed to protect the city’s coastal ecosystem while creating a public space for environmental education, research and recreation. He described the initiative as a long-term investment in Karachi’s environmental future amid rapid urban expansion and increasing climate-related challenges. “Environmental sustainability must remain central to our development agenda,” he said, adding that the project would help preserve the city’s ecological assets while promoting tourism, public awareness and community engagement.
Mangroves forests play a critical role in protecting coastlines from erosion, storm surges and rising sea levels. They also serve as breeding grounds for marine life and are among the world’s most effective natural carbon sinks.
He said the biodiversity park would feature mangroves conservation zones, ecological trails, educational facilities and awareness programmes designed to connect residents with the city’s natural environment.
