RAWALPINDI: Bushra Bibi, wife of jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan, was transferred back to Adiala Jail on Friday after undergoing right eye surgery at a hospital in Rawalpindi, jail sources said.

According to Adiala Jail sources, the incarcerated Bushra Bibi complained of impaired vision in her right eye. Following her complaint, the jail administration took notice and arranged an examination by eye specialists, they said.

They said that she was diagnosed with retinal detachment in the right eye. As per the diagnosis, doctors advised surgery. On the evening of April 16, Bushra Bibi was shifted to a hospital in Rawalpindi, they said.

The sources said that doctors carried out all required pre-surgery tests. The patient reportedly gave consent for the operation, they said, adding that surgery was performed by Professor Dr Nadeem Qureshi and his medical team.

Jail sources said that after the operation and an overnight hospital stay, she was discharged from the hospital and then transferred back to jail.

PTI chairman Barrister Ghohar Ali Khan, in a post on X, said that late at night, he was informed through a message that Bushra Bibi had been shifted to the hospital and that he would be briefed about the treatment.

“Pending that, I request a meeting between her and her family members, as well as a meeting between Khan and his family. I also urge that Khan be shifted to a hospital for treatment at the earliest, as this is their basic right under the law. Their health condition is serious, and every Pakistani is deeply concerned,” he said on X.

Maryam Riaz Wattoo, Bushra Bibi’s sister, in a post on X said that Yesterday (April 16), the family was suddenly asked to come to see Bushra Imran at 9:00 am on Friday (April 17), with no explanation. However, I had already been hearing from reliable sources that she was unwell and might require surgery, she said.

She said that when the family met her this morning, they realized she was being brought back from the hospital — she had undergone surgery overnight. For days, she had been in severe pain and had even lost vision in one eye, she said.

She said that this surgery requires continuous care and close monitoring by specialists. So why was she brought back to jail — to be left alone in an insect-infested cell? How is she supposed to avoid infection in such conditions?
