KARACHI: The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) will introduce third-party monitoring of development projects across the megacity to enhance transparency and accountability.
The decision was taken in a meeting of KMC engineering department chaired by Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Saturday.
The meeting reviewed the progress of ongoing schemes and discussed measures to improve oversight.
Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jaffer briefed the meeting that a resolution for the appointment of independent consultants to monitor projects had already been approved by the City Council.
Mayor Wahab said the move would ensure better utilisation of public resources and strengthen accountability mechanisms. “There will be no compromise on development work. Negligence will lead to action against engineers, including removal from positions.”
KMC is currently working on more than 700 development schemes across Karachi, ranging from road construction to the rehabilitation of markets and key infrastructure, officials said.
The Mayor directed that major projects — including Mirza Adam Khan Road, Sabiha Akhtar Road, SM Taufiq Road, Dadex Road, Pehlwan Goth Road, Turi Bangash Road and the restoration of historic markets — be completed at the earliest.
He also ordered the formation of dedicated monitoring teams comprising consultants and KMC officials to regularly review progress and ensure quality standards.
During the meeting, Director General Technical Services Tariq Mughal briefed participants on ongoing schemes, drawing a strong response from the mayor over delays in implementation. “Our offices exist to serve the citizens of Karachi.
There is no room for inefficiency or complacency,” Wahab said, reiterating that improving infrastructure remained a top priority for the city administration.
