BANNU: Ten civilians including seven women, two men and a child lost their lives, and four others were critically injured when a suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden vehicle into the wall of the Domel Police Station near a civilian locality in Bannu, razing mostly it to the ground.

The security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a rescue and search operation. District Emergency Officer Bakht Khan Wazir said that the terrorists aimed to target the peace-loving people of Bannu; however, their elimination is certain.

He further appealed to citizens to report any suspicious activities and cooperate with the security agencies. Operations under the National Action Plan will continue until the last militant is eliminated, he said.

A major part of the police station building and the Santri Check post was destroyed in the suicide explosion.

Reports were received that several roofs of the adjacent buildings were also collapsed due to the explosion. Soon after the incident, a Rescue 1122 team rushed to the site, and started relief operation.

Rescue teams were facing difficulties due to rain in the city. District Emergency Officer Bakht Khan Wazir said that the search and rescue operation will continue till the clearance of all the areas. He said that announcements were being made through mosque loudspeakers for help, and local residents were taking part in the rescue operation.

“Apparently, the suicide bomber intended to target the police station, but in haste, he struck a civilian house before reaching it,” Muhammad Sajjad Khan, a local police official, told AFP on Friday.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
