KARACHI: Sindh Government on Wednesday moved to expand its push into clean and inclusive transport with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to launch an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony in Karachi under the patronage of Senior Minister, holding portfolios of Information, Transport and Mass Transit, Sharjeel Inam Memon, with participation from government officials, the Sindh Mass Transit Authority and private sector partners.
Memon said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernise the transport sector, promote environmentally sustainable mobility and create employment opportunities. The project also aims to provide safer and more accessible transport options, particularly for women.
The EV taxi scheme builds on a series of provincial initiatives, including women-focused transport programmes and the introduction of electric buses and scooters, which officials say have helped expand female participation in mobility and the workforce.
The project is being supported by financial institutions including Sindh Bank, while interest from multiple private companies signals potential investment in the emerging EV ecosystem.
Senior Minister said the government is prioritising EV adoption in its transport policies and is planning to facilitate local manufacturing, including a proposed plant in the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone, to support long-term sector growth.
Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Investment Syed Qasim Naveed Qamar said public-private collaboration would be key to delivering improved transport infrastructure and services, adding that similar initiatives are gaining traction at both provincial and national levels.
Officials said the EV taxi project is expected to contribute to cleaner urban transport, reduce emissions and enhance economic opportunities, as Sindh accelerates efforts to build a more sustainable and inclusive mobility network.
