At least 17 killed, 56 injured in rain-related incidents in KP: PDMA

PESHAWAR: At least 17 people, including children and women were killed in different rain-related incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to a report of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

Rainfall, ranging from light to heavy, was recorded in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Swat, Bannu, Hangu, Nowshera, Tank, Bajaur, Karak, Parachinar, Malakand, as well as North and South Waziristan.

In Abbottabad, five people were killed when the roof of a house collapsed, while a woman was seriously injured. Among the deceased were four young girls.

According to a report by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), ongoing rains since March 25 have caused roofs and walls of houses to collapse, resulting in 17 deaths and 56 injuries. Among the deceased were 14 children, one man, and two women.

According to the report, 11 houses were damaged due to the rains, with most of the incidents occurring in Bannu and North Waziristan.

Authorities including PDMA, Rescue 1122, district administrations and relevant departments are coordinating efforts to assist affected families. Instructions have been issued to ensure immediate provision of relief goods to victims.

PDMA has directed the district administration of Bannu, one of the worst-affected areas, to promptly provide compensation and support to the families of the deceased.

Rainfall continues intermittently across various parts of the province and is expected to persist until Tuesday.

The Director General PDMA has urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel, refrain from visiting vulnerable tourist locations and strictly follow official advisories and alerts.

The PDMA Emergency Operations Center remains fully functional. Citizens are advised to report any emergency or seek information regarding weather conditions by calling the toll-free helpline 1700.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Muhammad Sohail Afridi expressed deep sorrow and regret over the human and financial losses caused by recent rainfall incidents across various districts of the province. Sohail Afridi conveyed heartfelt condolences to the affected families, prayed for the forgiveness of those who lost their lives, and wished patience and strength for the bereaved. He also extended his best wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The Chief Minister directed hospital authorities to ensure that the injured receive timely and best possible medical care. He also instructed that rescue and relief operations be further accelerated. He emphasized that the provincial government shares the grief of the affected families and will not leave them alone in this difficult time. All possible assistance will be provided to support the victims and their families during this period of hardship.

Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast intermittent rainfall in various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa until Tuesday. Rain was also reported in several districts of Punjab, including Sargodha, Bhakkar, Lodhran, Vehari, Chiniot, Hafizabad, and Bahawalpur.
