FBR chief tells KCCI members: Tax refunds claims to be processed efficiently

KARACHI: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langrial gave assurances to Karachi business community that all legitimate claims would be processed efficiently.

Chairman FBR on Thursday visited the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) accompanied by Member Customs Operations, Chief Collector Customs Appraisement (South), and Chief Commissioner of the Large Taxpayer Office (LTO) Karachi, in a bid to directly engages with the city’s business community over pressing tax and trade challenges.

Senior KCCI representatives presented a detailed briefing covering a range of policy and operational concerns, with timely processing of tax refunds, complications surrounding super tax installments, and procedural bottlenecks topping the agenda. These issues, business leaders argued, have been weighing heavily on the liquidity and day-to-day functioning of local enterprises.

Chairman FBR responded with on-the-spot directives, instructing the Chief Commissioner LTO and the Chief Collector Customs Appraisement (South) to prioritise and fast-track the resolution of the flagged issues. He assured KCCI representatives that every concern raised would be carefully examined and that IRS and Customs officials in Karachi had been tasked with conducting a comprehensive review and delivering timely, effective responses.

On the matter of tax refunds, Chairman FBR gave assurances that all legitimate claims would be processed efficiently, provided they meet due process and codal requirements, a move he said would directly improve liquidity for businesses operating in the city.

Meanwhile, he reaffirmed that all due taxes would be collected strictly in accordance with the law. He also reiterated FBR’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption, making clear that officials are strictly prohibited from creating unnecessary hurdles or soliciting undue favours from taxpayers.

“Any official found involved in misconduct will face strict disciplinary action,” the Chairman warned, urging businesspeople to report instances of corruption within the FBR system, backed by credible evidence, so that effective action could be taken.
