PM Shehbaz takes stock of economic situation

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday reassured the nation that the country has an adequate supply of petroleum products and insisted the government is prepared to manage any situation arising from ongoing global tensions.

Chairing a review meeting on measures to stabilise the national economy and provide relief to the public, Shebaz credited “timely” government decisions for ensuring a continuous fuel supply across the country.

“In light of the recent global situation, consultations are underway regarding additional measures to support the masses,” he added.

He noted that decisions made promptly by the committee tasked with maintaining economic stability amid shifting global conditions had facilitated uninterrupted fuel availability.

Sharif added that national-level austerity and savings measures have been implemented, with further initiatives in progress.

He also ordered a third-party audit to verify the implementation of all ongoing measures.

“Economic stability and relief for masses remain the government’s top priorities,” he said, adding that all measures are designed not only to provide immediate relief but also to ensure long-term economic stability.

The prime minister directed petroleum distribution companies to sell fuel at government-determined rates and maintain transparency in their operations.

Officials briefed the PM on the country’s fuel reserves, petroleum imports to meet demand, and steps being taken to protect the public amid global uncertainties.

They said the government is continuously monitoring fuel sales at set prices.

A new feature in the Pak App now allows consumers to report fuel shortages or overpricing anywhere in the country, triggering immediate government action, officials added. Meeting participants also praised Sharif’s decision last Friday to freeze fuel prices, averting further strain on households.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema, Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervez Malik, Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar, Minister for IT Shiza Fatima Khawaja, Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kiani and senior officials from relevant institutions.
