Special Rehabilitation Initiative: KMC to reconstruct 139 key roads
KARACHI: A high-level meeting was held under the chairmanship of Minister for Local Government Sindh, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, to finalize the Karachi Special Road Rehabilitation Programme under the Minister Local Government’s Initiative.
During the meeting, Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab briefed participants on the finalization of 183 important roads falling under various Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs) of Karachi. He informed that these roads play a vital role in managing the city’s traffic flow, serving as major arteries and alternative routes that cater to thousands of commuters daily.
Minister for Local Government, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, directed the Municipal Commissioner Karachi to expedite all necessary procedures and immediately launch the tendering process to ensure swift execution of the initiative. He emphasized that the project will significantly contribute to the rehabilitation of Karachi’s infrastructure and improve civic facilities for residents across the city.
Highlighting the broader vision behind the initiative, the Minister stated that under the directives of Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Sindh Government is committed to transforming Karachi’s infrastructure in line with international standards. He expressed confidence that the project will bring visible and meaningful improvement to the city’s road network within the current year.
Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab further informed the meeting that, following the successful rehabilitation of roads, solarization of streetlights will also be undertaken. He noted that this step will be implemented in line with the successful model of Shahrah-e-Faisal, where solar streetlights have produced encouraging results in terms of energy efficiency, cost reduction, and improved illumination.
The meeting was attended by Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Special Secretary Local Government Syed Azhar Shah, Municipal Commissioner Karachi Ibrar Jaffar, Managing Director Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, along with other senior officials.
