ISLAMABAD: The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi emphasised that a strong and credible justice system is a foundational pillar for sustainable development and democratic governance.

CJP Yahya Afridi on Monday held a productive meeting with Mohamed Yahya, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, along with a delegation comprising Country Representatives of United Nations Development Programme, UN Women, United Nations Children’s Fund, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and UNFPA.

The meeting provided a valuable platform for an in-depth exchange of views on reform priorities within Pakistan’s justice sector and the evolving role of judicial institutions in strengthening governance, accountability, and public confidence in the rule of law. The Chief Justice shared his perspectives on ongoing reform interventions aimed at improving access to justice, enhancing institutional efficiency, and ensuring a justice system that is responsive, inclusive, and citizen-centric.

In the course of the discussion, the Chief Justice underscored the close linkage between justice sector reforms and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals which call for access to justice for all, and the building of effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions.

The Chief Justice also expressed appreciation for the constructive role played by United Nations agencies in Pakistan in supporting governance reforms and institutional strengthening. He acknowledged their contributions in areas such as rule of law development, human rights protection, gender equality, child-sensitive justice, and capacity building of justice sector institutions, noting that these efforts have meaningfully complemented national reform initiatives.

The meeting further explored potential avenues for future collaboration between the judiciary and United Nations organisations, including technical assistance, judicial education and training, data-driven and evidence-based reform initiatives, policy support, and the sharing of international best practices. Both sides highlighted the importance of structured engagement and sustained partnership to address emerging challenges and to promote innovation and resilience within the justice system.

The interaction reflected a shared commitment to dialogue, cooperation, and the advancement of justice sector reforms aligned with Pakistan’s constitutional values and international development commitments.
