KARACHI: For protecting the beaches from pollution and create environmental awareness among the citizens, a cleanliness and plastic-free awareness campaign were jointly organised by Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and Patham Institute.
The campaign was launched on the special instructions of the MD, Sindh Solid Waste Management Board, Tariq Ali Nizamani.
A large number of young students participated in this campaign.
The participants collected the garbage, plastic bottles and bags scattered on the beach and transferred them to eco-friendly bags.
Tariq Ali Nizamani took special part on this occasion. In his message to the students, he said that the participation of youth and children in this activity is proof that our future generation is serious about protecting our environment.
Public participation along with institutions is the only way through which we can make Karachi a clean city according to world standards.
During the campaign, concerns were expressed that plastic waste is not only affecting the beauty of the beach but is also a threat to marine life. Plastic waste is becoming food for marine organisms and killing them. Garbage and plastic bags get stuck in the city’s rivers and canals, disrupting the drainage system, which causes flooding during the rains.
Patham Manager Academic, Sara Faisal said that the job of educational institutions is not only to impart curricular education but also to make responsible citizens.
She appealed to the public not to leave garbage there while having a picnic on the beach but to use dustbins. Stop using plastic bags.
At the end of the cleanliness drive, SSWMB staff provided assistance in safely transporting the garbage to the designated places for disposal.
