ISLAMABAD: The government has confirmed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan underwent a medical check-up at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) last week.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, clarified reports regarding Imran Khan’s health on Thursday, stating that eye specialists had examined the former premier at Adiala Jail prior to his check-up at PIMS.
Tarar said the former premier, who is currently incarcerated at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, was examined by eye specialists in jail. Following their recommendation, he was transferred to PIMS on the night of January 24 for the procedure.
“At PIMS, his eyes were further evaluated, and with his written consent, a short medical procedure was performed. He was then returned to Adiala jail with important instructions,” Tarar said. He added that Imran’s vitals remained stable throughout, and the ex-premier is “absolutely healthy.”
The minister emphasized that all prisoners have access to medical care in accordance with jail regulations, and reiterated that Imran’s health is not a cause for concern. “Whenever a doctor refers a prisoner for treatment, we ensure they are sent to the hospital,” Tarar said.Earlier, PTI had claimed that Imran Khan was suffering from a severe eye infection that could cause permanent vision loss if not treated promptly.
The party stated that the former prime minister had developed a Central Retinal Vein Occlusion in his right eye, posing a serious threat to his eyesight.
PTI had criticised the government and jail authorities for insisting on providing treatment within the prison, claiming that doctors had deemed such treatment impossible in jail.
The party also appealed to the court to allow Khan’s medical examination, but the request has been pending since August 2025.
Meanwhile, Khan’s sisters have not confirmed PTI’s claims. They said they had not been informed about Khan’s condition.
Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan, stated that she has not been able to meet her brother for the past three months and expressed confusion over how the news reached the media.
Uzma Khan said she met Imran Khan on December 2, but he did not mention any eye-related issues during the meeting.
Norain Khan added that even if the news were true, it should have been shared with the family first.
