In a highly important development, Pakistan has been invited to be a part of the Gaza “Board of Peace” that is being formed by US President Donald Trump. According to the Foreign Office, the prime minister of Pakistan has received the invitation from the US President to join the Board of Peace on Gaza. This development, in my view, clearly indicates the rising profile of Pakistan in the comity of nations in recent weeks and months.

The Pakistani leadership must remain engaged with international efforts for peace and security in Gaza, and its presence on the ‘Board of Peace’ can help the country play a meaningful role in overall efforts aimed at reconstruction of a battered and bruised Gaza. At present, the strip is nothing but a sea of destruction. It is said that the ‘Board of Peace’ will be tasked with not only running the day-to-day administration of Gaza, but also its reconstruction or rebuilding. The Shehbaz Sharif-led government, in my view, must not squander away this opportunity; it must accept the invite.
