LAHORE: The enforcement teams of Punjab Food Authority sealed two renowned restaurants, one well-known bakery and two fake honey manufacturing units, while registering two FIRs during a province-wide grand operation against major food outlets.
The action was taken on the directions of PFA Director General Muhammad Asim Javaid to ensure strict compliance with food safety laws across Punjab, including Lahore.
The food safety teams conducted inspections in Township, Barkat Market, Rail Bazaar and Iqbal Park areas. During the operation, 155kg of fake honey, glucose, 200kg of sugar syrup, 180kg of expired food items, 104kg of stale food and more than two maunds of prohibited ingredients were recovered and discarded.
Director general said that 208 restaurants were inspected across the province, during which 66 food outlets were fined a total amount of Rs1.045 million for violations of Punjab Food Authority regulations. He said that heavy fines were imposed and outlets were sealed over grave violations of food laws.
He said that two units involved in the manufacturing of fake honey were sealed and FIRs were registered against the owners due to non-compliance with food safety laws.
Poor sanitation arrangements, dirty stagnant water in storage areas, use of non-food grade utensils, foul smell, unhygienic conditions, absence of mandatory records, required documents and employees’ medical certificates were observed during inspections.
He further stated that, on the directions of the Chief Minister Punjab, the crackdown against the adulteration mafia has been further intensified and no compromise will be made on food quality. He said that the Punjab Food Authority is operating round the clock with zero tolerance against elements playing with public health.
