Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi is likely to be replaced, with six potential candidates under review for the position, Aaj News reported citing sources on Sunday.

The list includes three political figures and three retired security officials, the sources said.

Despite the developments, KP Governor and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Kundi said he was unaware of any move to replace him, adding that he would accept whatever decision his party makes.

According to sources, the political personalities being considered for the role are Awami National Party Senior Vice President and former KP chief minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti, Qaumi Watan Party Chairman and former federal minister Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Parliamentarians Chairman Pervez Khattak.

The retired security officials under consideration include former corps commander Lt Gen (retd) Khalid Rabbani, former Frontier Corps inspector general (retd) Ghayur Mehmood, and former IG FC (retd) Tariq Khan.

The possibility of a replacement comes amid months of political friction between the provincial government and Governor Kundi. It remains to be seen how the situation unfolds in the coming days.

Kundi was appointed as the governor in May last year, on recommendation of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and after approval of President Asif Ali Zardari.

The PPP stalwart has served as the deputy speaker of the National Assembly from 2008 to 2013. He was also an adviser to the prime minister in the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government.
