LAHORE: On the directions of Punjab government, a major crackdown is under way against drug traffickers in Dera Ghazi Khan under a strict zero-tolerance policy. In the latest action, a notorious, record-holder drug dealer, Rafi Akbar alias Rafi Seth, and his father Ghulam Akbar were killed by the firing of their own accomplices, while his three brothers managed to flee from the scene.

According to police, multiple serious criminal cases, including murder, attempted murder and drug trafficking, have been registered against Nauman Akbar, Nishat Akbar, Zubair Akbar, Naeem Akbar, Faheem Akbar, Rafiq Akbar and Rafi Akbar alias Rafi Seth. During a decisive operation against the gang in the jurisdiction of Raitra and Kot Qaisrani police stations, the suspects opened indiscriminate fire with heavy weapons on the police party, as a result of which five policemen were injured.

The injured officials — ASI Abdul Jabbar and Constables Tasawwur, Muhammad Saleem, Jawad Hussain and Ghazanfar Abbas — were shifted to Taunsa Hospital, where they are being provided medical treatment.

District Police Officer Dera Ghazi Khan, Muhammad Ali Wasim, reached the crime scene, reviewed the ground situation and formed special police teams to ensure the immediate arrest of the fleeing suspects. Search, combing and blockade operations are under way in Raitra and adjoining areas.

Police say that five members of the same family are facing dozens of cases related to drug trafficking. Narcotics worth millions of rupees and heavy weapons have already been recovered from them, and further important revelations are expected during the investigation.

According to the DPO, an indiscriminate crackdown will continue against all those involved in the “cancerous trade” of narcotics, and every possible measure will be taken to eliminate this menace.
