ISLAMABAD: In his message on the 58th Foundation Day of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), President Asif Ali Zardari paid rich tribute to the party’s founding leaders, Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, crediting their vision and sacrifices for strengthening Pakistan’s democratic foundations.

President Zardari said the PPP has consistently risen to meet the defining challenges of its era. “When Pakistan faced authoritarian rule, the PPP stood firm as the party of democratic resistance and led the struggle for the restoration of the people’s rights,” he noted, adding that the party has always worked to stabilise the democratic system, promote unity, and keep the political process on track.

Recalling the party’s historic contributions, the President noted that under the leadership of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan received its first consensus Constitution in 1973 — “a national covenant that continues to guide our democracy.” He highlighted the PPP’s role in strengthening the federation, introducing reforms in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, laying the foundations of the country’s nuclear programme, and advancing major reforms in land rights, labour protections, education, and social justice.
