RAWALPINDI: The sisters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan and senior party leaders continued their sit-in outside Adiala Jail on Tuesday in protest against the authorities’ refusal to allow a meeting with Khan despite court orders.
Khan’s three sisters – Aleema Khan, Dr Uzma, and Noreen Niazi– along with party leaders Salman Akram Raja, leader of the opposition alliance Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Aain-e-Pakistan (TTAP) Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, PTI MNA Shahid Khattak, provincial minister Meena Khan, and hundreds of party workers, staged the sit-in near the Factory Checkpoint.
The protest began after the family and accompanying party leaders were denied permission to meet Khan on the scheduled visitation day.
Men, women, and children from the party ranks joined the demonstration, chanting slogans demanding Khan’s release and condemning the government.
A heavy contingent of police was deployed to prevent Khan’s sisters and their supporters from moving towards the main gate of Adiala Jail.
Addressing the gathering, Aleema Khan vowed to continue the sit-in until the authorities allowed her and her sisters to meet Imran Khan.
She also condemned the treatment meted out to them by female police personnel in a previous incident, describing their behaviour as “shameless.”
“If they want to arrest us, we are not afraid,” she added.
Noreen Niazi urged the public to raise their voice for Khan’s release. “Khan has been completely isolated; we do not know in what condition he is being kept. Had they allowed us even five minutes to meet him, we would have left,” she said.
Khan’s sisters, party leaders, and workers continued their sit-in until the filing of this report.
