ISLAMABAD: Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said on Monday that Islam upholds the dignity of women and strictly forbids all forms of violence and oppression against them.

Calling the empowerment and protection of women a prerequisite for a just and progressive society, the Speaker made these remarks in connection with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The Speaker said Pakistan’s development and prosperity depend on the meaningful inclusion of women in all spheres of national life and the urgent need to eradicate violence perpetrated against them. He urged state institutions, civil society, communities, and all stakeholders to work collectively toward ending gender-based violence and ensuring socio-economic justice for women.

Highlighting Pakistan’s legislative progress, Sadiq noted that Parliament has enacted significant laws to protect women’s rights, prevent workplace harassment, safeguard inheritance rights, curb domestic violence, and improve access to justice. He added that as a signatory to the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), Pakistan is obligated to eliminate discrimination, ensure equal opportunities, and uphold women’s fundamental rights.

He said the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus continues to play a vital role in fulfilling these commitments through advocacy, legislative facilitation, and awareness initiatives.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq emphasized that eliminating violence against women requires transforming societal attitudes, strengthening the implementation of laws, and creating a safe, enabling environment for women throughout the country. He reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to advancing women’s rights, ensuring their protection, and promoting their socio-economic empowerment.
