KARACHI: Pakistan is spending billions of rupees every year on foreign cars and now is the time that the country focuses on making its indigenous cars to boost our local automotive industry and economy, said Pasban Democratic Party (Altaf Shakoor here Sunday.

He said we depend mostly on the Japanese car brands that are very costly and not eager for swift technology transfer.

He said car companies in Pakistan are more or less the assemblers of foreign cars, not interested in making cars fully in the country. He said this trend should now change and we must make our own car brands, instead of relying on assembling plants of foreign cars.

He said that Pakistan is the world’s fifth most populated country and the second-largest Muslim population of the world; however, it doesn’t have indigenous car brands.

He said in the past a Pakistani car, Adam Revo, was designed and assembled in the country but later this brand stopped production for unknown reasons.

Altaf Shakoor said that now even many developing African countries have created their indigenous cars, saving import bills and providing transportation facilities to their citizens at reduced costs. He said we should learn from them to patronage and develop our own automotive industry.

He said car demand is fairly high in Pakistan and even hundreds of thousands of used cars are imported in the country. He said by developing indigenous cars we can reduce this huge import bill and provide cost-effective local cars to our citizens.

He asked the Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, chief of army staff Gen Asim Munir and SIFC to give special attention to the car making industry in Pakistan and give ample facilities to the industries and entrepreneurs interested in developing local brands of cars and also other vehicles.
