LAHORE: Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafiq has said that the delimitation of tehsils would also have to be reviewed during the formation of the new local government system in Punjab.

He expressed these views while chairing a meeting of the task force, formed by the Punjab Chief Minister, on Wednesday and deliberated on the complexity of tehsil boundaries and constituencies across Punjab.

The members of the task force, including Punjab Finance Minister Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, Punjab Law Minister Malik Sohaib Ahmad Bharath, Senior Member Board of Revenue Nabil Javed, Commissioner Lahore Zaid bin Maqsood and Deputy Commissioner Rafia Haider, also attended in the meeting.

The task force agreed that changes in administrative boundaries are necessary given population growth.

The Minister averred that measures are being taken to provide maximum facilities to the people near their homes. In this context, the establishment of new tehsils and local government towns is necessary, he said.

On this occasion, the Finance Minister said that the financial implications would be kept in mind while making the new delimitation. “The population of Lahore is over 13 million and hence, there is a need to make Lahore district a model and demarcate the rest of the districts as well,” he added.

The Law Minister said that in light of recent census data, all the departments would have to make necessary arrangements in terms of new constituencies; in particular, the education department would have to take special measures.
