Sri Lankan shares end lower as financials, consumer staples drag

Sri Lankan shares fell over 1% on Tuesday, hurt by losses in the financial and consumer staple sectors.

The CSE All-Share index was 1.46% lower at 9,092.74 points at the closing bell.

Investment vehicle Browns Investments Plc and conglomerate Lanka Orix Leasing Company Plc were the top drags, falling 2.8%.

The equity market's turnover was 8.67 billion rupees, according to stock exchange data.

Trading volume on the exchange dropped to 504.8 million shares from 874.4 million shares in the previous session.

Sri Lankan shares see worst day in two weeks as industrials drag

Foreign investors were net sellers in the equity market, offloading shares worth 115.1 million rupees, exchange data showed.

The island nation reported 3,182 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total to 468,899, even as the country remains under a lockdown.

Sri Lanka reported 180 fatalities due to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 10,320.

As per data from Johns Hopkins University, the country has fully vaccinated about 42.1% of its entire population so far.
