(Karachi) India has reported a dramatic increase in coronavirus cases as infections crossed three million mark as compared to Pakistan which reported less number of cases and fatalities.

As per Bloomberg's Coronavirus Tracker, India reported a record daily jump of COVID-19 infections, claiming lives of over 56,000 people. At least 65,000 new infections are being registered each day in India, signalling to an alarming situation.

On the other hand, Pakistan registered 292,174 cases while 6,231 deaths have been reported so far. The report mentioned that corona cases in Pakistan rose by only one percent as compared to India.

India's COVID-19 infection rate is now higher than the United States and Brazil which were regarded as the two most affected countries, the data revealed. To make matters worse, Indian authorities also failed to maintain accurate data of fatalities due to the virus, making it even harder to ascertain the true picture of the outbreak.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government seems to have failed in controlling the pandemic as the disease is fast spreading to villages which lack medical facilities. The grim situation has exposed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's false claims of effectively tackling the corona outbreak, the report highlighted.

Being the world's second most populous state, India's higher infection rate is not only a threat to its population but it also puts its neighbouring countries at risk of reigniting the spread of coronavirus.

More than half of global fatalities have been reported in four countries - the US, Brazil, Mexico and India. Several countries are working on a number of vaccines to fight the novel coronavirus.

Russia is planning to roll out its "Sputnik-V" vaccine by end of this year while biotech companies in China are also nearing completion of phase 3 trials of corona vaccine.
