The presidents of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran are all set to hold a summit today (Friday) with a view to devising a mechanism for holding peace talks the Afghan Taliban. The summit called is being held on the desire of Iran and according to sources, the three heads of the neighbouring states would mull over devising a joint strategy for peace and stability, particularly a plan to hold constructive talks with various warring groups in Afghanistan.
The sources said that Afghanistan, which has already expressed reservations over US talks with the Taliban in Doha, would advocate its plan of initiating peace talks in Saudi Arabia. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani Thursday greeted Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad upon their arrival in Islamabad.
The visiting dignitaries held informal talks with President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani separately. Meanwhile, sources said that visiting Afghan President also held meetings with representatives of various religious parties including Jamaat-e-Islami, JUI-F and JUI-Sami to seek their support in reconciliation process. Jamaat-e-Islami delegation, which was led by Senator Professor Khurshid Ahmed, also comprised Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Siraj-ul-Haq and Abdul Ghafar Aziz.
