Police resorted to tear gassing and baton-charge to disperse the Lady Health Workers (LHW) protesting against non-provision of their salaries and regularisation of services outside Karachi Press Club here on Wednesday. Police also arrested several LHWs. The protesting LHWs were trying to march toward Fawara Chowk, but riot police did not allow them and resorted them to baton-charge and teargas shelling. Many LHWs injured and were rushed to hospital.
The LHWs were protesting against non-payment of their salaries for the last five months and regularisation of their services. Meanwhile, Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat ul Ebad Khan has said that immediate steps were being taken for the payment of salaries to the LHWs.
A statement issued here said Deputy Commissioner South, Mustafa Jamal Kazi held out the assurance on behalf of the Governor that the salaries would be paid to the LHW shortly. He said that the Governor Sindh had talked to the Federal government in this regard.
