The Earthq-uake Engineering Centre (EEC) of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) on Tuesday signed an agreement with the National Centre of Excellence in Geology (NCEG), University of Peshawar, to extend co-operation in earthquake engineering seismology and disaster risk reduction.
Vice-Chancellor UET Imtiaz H Gilani and Director NCEG Dr Asif Khan formally signed the MoU under which a network of earthquake sensors would be installed in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The agreement is part of the UET initiative Strong Motion Instrumentation Programme (PK SMIP) that was launched in 2007 on the model of Geological Survey's SMIP of California and with the technical assistance of the Department of Conservation, State of California.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ali said that under the MoU, 12 earthquake sensors would be installed in selective regions of the KP to obtain data for measuring ground motion and effects of earthquake shaking on different soil types. The acquired data would be helpful for the disaster management agencies to take proper relief measures. Its recommendations would also be disseminated among the seismic engineering professionals and government policy makers to make changes in building codes and formulate effective national seismic safety policy, he added.
