Police on Tuesday detained a US diplomat and seized ammunition from his possession here at Peshawar International Airport, but he was released after many hours' interrogation and intervention of US consulate. According to police, a US national was taken into custody by Airport Security Force when detectors found a magazine full of bullets in his luggage.
They handed him over to personnel of the West Cantonment Police. They said that during interrogation it was learnt that he was a member of the diplomatic staff at Islamabad and was going to Islamabad on PIA flight PK-218. The official said that he was released when the Foreign Office confirmed his identity as diplomat, and negotiations were also held with some US officials.
He said that he had forgotten his pistol at his residence, in Islamabad, and mistakenly carried the bullets. He also claimed that he had come Peshawar via road and thus escaped security procedure. West cantonment police said that no case had been registered against him.
