Speaker National Assembly Dr. Fehmida Mirza has asked the World Health Organisation, diabetes organisations, NGOs and health departments to make concrete efforts for creating awareness about diabetes.
In a message issued on the World Diabetes Day, she called for joining hands to stop spreading of the global occurrence of the chronic disease. She said that the World Diabetes Day served as an opportunity to promote awareness that every man with diabetes or at risk of diabetes deserved the best possible quality of education to prevent and care.
The Speaker said that a cohesive and comprehensive strategy should be adopted to set norms and standards to promote surveillance to encourage prevention and to raise awareness to curb this fatal disease.
Fehmida Mirza said that besides adults and adolescents, diabetes could also strike children of any age, even toddlers and babies. She said if diabetes would not be detected early enough in a child or misdiagnosed, the disease could be fatal.
She attributed that the financial constraints was the main cause of child's mortality because their families could not afford appropriate medication they needed. She said that as reported by world health agencies, diabetes causes five per cent of the total deaths globally.
She called upon the federal and provincial healthcare agencies for focusing on the segments of deprived communities and vulnerable groups particularly focusing the attention on populations migrating from rural to urban centres.
