Artificial intelligence can 'outperform doctors' in future

It’s not new for us that artificial intelligence (AI) is excelling more in almost every industry, including medicine. It is now being said that AI has advanced so much that it can prove to be better than doctors in detecting heart and lung diseases.

Team of researchers from an Oxford Hospital developed AI devices that can diagnose heart diseases and lung cancer better than doctors and also help saving lives by detecting the diseases much earlier.

Being another example of machines taking over humans, it has been said that doctors, while diagnosing a patient’s heart are 80% accurate whereas, the other 20% indicates the need for improvement.

Artificial Intelligence to replace humans

A device ‘Ultromics’ is an AI diagnostic system and was developed for heart diagnosis aimed to pick up scans more accurately. If the recommendation is positive, it means there is a risk for a heart attack.

Researchers used heart scans of 1,000 patients treated by company’s chief medical officer Paul Leeson. Training the device, researchers also collected data regarding if those patients suffered heart problems or not. Till now, Ultromics has been tested in multiple clinical trials and has significantly outperformed human cardiologists, as told by Leeson to BBC News.

Reports suggest that out of 60,000 heart scans per year, 12,000 are misdiagnosed. Leeson said, “As cardiologists, we accept that we don’t always get it right at the moment. But now there is a possibility that way may be able to do better.”

Futurism reported another AI system by a company ‘Optellum’ that shows the risks of lung cancer. This can save money and several months of tests and procedures to detect the disease. It can also detect if the patient has a lung cancer much earlier than usual processes saving over numerous cancer patients. It can save around £10bn if adopted in US and Europe, as its chief sci-tech officer Dr. Timor Kadir says.
