SC hears petitions against Nawaz Sharif's appointment as PML-N president

The Supreme Court is hearing today (Monday) as many as 13 petitions challenging the appointment of deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as president of Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz.

Once the hearing commenced, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar observed that Parliament is the supreme body of lawmaking in the country. According to local media reports, Justice Nisar asked the petitioners to convince the court on the maintainability of petitions and asked under which law can Parliament's legislation be nullified.

The bench also rejected an adjournment application from the lawyer of the National Party.

The petitioners include Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan, Awami Muslim league Chief Sheikh Rashid, Jamshed Dasti from Pakistan Peoples Party and some small political parties. A three-member bench headed by Justice Nisar, including Justice Faisal Arab and Justice Ijazul Ahsan is hearing the case.

Earlier, the petitions had been objected and returned by the registry directing the petitioners to approach the appropriate forum. However, Justice Nisar had dismissed the objection raised by the registrar office.

Sharif was disqualified as the prime minister in July last year and was later elected as the chief of his party as a result of the Elections Act 2017.
