Petraeus meets Kayani

Published Updated

General David H. Petraeus, Commander of the Nato forces in Afghanistan, on Thursday visited Pakistan and discussed the Pak-Afghan cross border infiltration and issues related to war on terror with Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani. According to US Embassy statement, General Petraeus met with General Kayani and discussed various topics of mutual interest and ways to improve regional security.
General Petraeus also met with US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter and received updates on the US security assistance mission to Pakistan. Accompanying General Petraeus was Marine Lieutenant General John Allen who will succeed General Petraeus as commander of the Nato International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.
ISPR also released a same statement regarding the meeting between General Petreaus and General Kayani, however, did not explain the objective of his visit but said that the visiting dignitary remained with him for some time and discussed matters of professional interest.
Defence sources said that the visit was part of efforts to mend the 'shaky' ties between the two important allies in war on terror. Besides the issues related to war against terrorism, the sources said that the two sides also discussed the issue of cross border infiltration. US has repeatedly conveyed its concerns over North Waziristan based Haqqani network's cross border activities in Afghanistan while Pakistan is concerned over the repeated attacks by Afghan militants in Upper Dir district.
