Labour organisations here Sunday commemorated World Labour Day through staging rallies to pay homage to the martyrs of Chicago with resolve to continue struggle for the rights of labourers in the country.
In this connection, National Labour Federation, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa staged rallies in different parts of the province. Such rallies were also staged in Haripur, Bannu, D.I. Khan and other cities of the province, which were participated by industrial workers, Suzuki Driver Union, Handcart Union, Quinche Rickshaw Union and others.
One of the rallies started from Govt. Higher Secondary School, Peshawar City No.1 and marched to Peshawar Press Club to turn into a public meeting. Participants of the rally were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans relating to May Day. The speakers demanded relief for labourers in proportion to the price hike and giving ownership rights of labour and official residential colonies to them. They also called for extending social security and Employees Old-Age Benefit Institute pension to the workers of break kilns. The labourers also demanded fixing the salary of workers equal to the price of 12 gram gold and halt to their exploitation. They called for granting immediate right of pension to contract employees and increase in the salaries of all government and semi-government employees in proportion to the prevailing price hike and inflation in the country.
