KARACHI: Sindh government has earmarked a sum of Rs 448 million as its contribution to the Green Pakistan Program during fiscal year 2017-18.
Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah in his budget speech Monday said being fully cognizant of the importance of green cover the PPP government has initiated series of plantations across the province.
It was claimed that the provincial government has already provided green cover to 6605 acres of land by means of riverine forest, canal and roadside plantations.
Syed Murad Ali Shah said plantation was prerequisite to counter droughts and sudden floods destroying local towns and villages.
"Over exploitation of resources and failure to safeguard forests, lakes and waterways has already played quite an havoc with our lives," he said.
In this context, he mentioned measures adopted for protection of Manchhar Lake against pollution besides relevant measures to prevent sea intrusion causing salinity and water logging.
"Series of projects are also being designed to protect our major lakes and fresh water reserves," he said mentioning that mangroves have already been planted on 37000 acres of Coastal land.
This, he reminded was extremely important for protection of coastal regions against sea intrusion.
The Chief Minister who also holds the portfolio of finance said Rs. 65 million has also been allocated for revival of wildlife under the provincial budget for fiscal year 2017-18.
