imageOn his 89th birthday, Google paid a tribute to Pakistan most renowned and respectable humanitarian, the Late Abdul Sattar Edhi with its Doodle honours portraying him with an ambulance, a mother with two kids, a hospital, a dog and a book.

Abdul Sattar Edhi called the 'Angel of Mercy' of Pakistan - would have turned 89 today. Google changed its logo in the United States, Iceland, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Estonia, UK, Denmark, Ireland, South Korea, Singapore and Pakistan to a doodle or illustration of Edhi.

Edhi was born in India on February 28 1928 but moved to Karachi shortly after Pakistan was formed. He soon noticed that many Pakistanis lacked medical, educational, and other basic necessities, and he made it his lifes mission to help those in need.

In 1951, he established the Edhi foundation, which is funded solely by private donations.

Abdul Sattar Edhi founded the worlds largest volunteer ambulance network in Pakistan, the Edhi Foundation. The Edhi Foundation is currently the largest welfare organization in Pakistan. Since its inception, it has rescued more than 20,000 abandoned babies, rehabilitated some 50,000 orphans and has trained more than 40,000 nurses.

It also runs the worlds largest ambulance service (operating 1,500 vehicles) and Edhi ambulances are welcomed as friendly neighbours throughout Pakistan.

In honoring the man who has come to be known as the Angel of Pakistan, Google suggests trying to help someone in need to mark the day of his birth. Edhi passed away on July 8 last year and was laid to rest in the clothes he died in. He was buried in a grave he himself dug several years earlier at the Edhi cemetery near Karachi.
