KARACHI: The Sindh capital has become yet another victim of an unforeseen disease, which has been spreading across the metropolis like wildfire, affecting thousands of its dwellers.
According to latest reports, the disease called Chikungunya seems to be most prevalent in Karachis Malir area. The medical experts believe that the disease causes high fever in the initial stage which is joined with severe pain in the joints, leaving patients paralyzed for three days.
Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. It causes fever and severe joint pain, whereas, other symptoms include muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash.
Earlier, Sindh Health Department had requested Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP), Islamabad to send its experts to investigate the cases of suspected 'Chikungunya', after receiving complain from a healthcare facility about registering at least 60 cases of high fever and severe joint pain.
These cases were reported mainly from the areas of Malir and Khokhrapar.
It is pertinent to inform that the disease shares some clinical signs with dengue, and can be misdiagnosed in areas where dengue is common.
Meanwhile, a special team of doctors from Islamabad will reach Malir on Monday to investigate the cause and remedies for the ailment.
