imageFRANKFURT: Lufthansa said on Friday it is to sell tickets on some routes jointly with Etihad Airways under a code-sharing agreement, joining peers in cooperating with fast-expanding Middle Eastern airlines.

Under the agreement the German airline will place its LH code on Etihad's flights between its home base in Abu Dhabi and Frankfurt as well as on services between Abu Dhabi and Munich.

Etihad will in turn put its EY code on Lufthansa's long-haul services between Frankfurt and Rio de Janeiro as well as Bogota.

"The announcement of the code share represents a positive move by Lufthansa to work with one of the Gulf carriers," independent industry consultant John Strickland said.

Australia's Qantas Airways has a similar agreement with Etihad rival Emirates, while British Airways has a revenue-sharing agreement with Qatar Airways, which owns 20 percent of BA's parent, IAG.

Lufthansa Chief Executive Carsten Spohr said in a statement that Lufthansa and Etihad would also consider extending their cooperation to other areas, without being more specific.

The German flagship carrier also on Friday finalised a deal to lease 38 aircraft and crew from Air Berlin, the smaller German carrier that is part-owned by Etihad.
