ISLAMABAD: The senate on Thursday discussed in detail the motion moved by various senators under Rule 218 on resolution on formation of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security.
Participating in the discussion, Senator Sherry Rehman asked to pass the motion as there was a dire need for formation of parliamentary committee on national security for accountability of National Action Plan (NAP) and other initiatives.
Senator Sehar Kamran said that the country was facing several challenges and it was high time to give strength to the parliament. She added the parliament should be taken into confidence on all issues including national security, relations with other countries etc.
Senator Dr Jehanzeb Jamaldeni said that the supremacy of the parliament was essential and steps should be taken in that regard. He added the parliament may have system or committee to monitor all outstanding issues.
Senator Usman Kakar said that the parliament has important role regarding security issues and added that every one should be answerable to the parliament regarding security issues.
Senator Abdul Qayum said that formation of parliamentary committee on national security was a good demand and said that the government had no objection on that matter.
Senator Sallahuddin Tirmizi said that already existing institutions should be further strengthened rather forming new ones. He said that implementation on existing laws was essential.
Senator Siraj-ul-Haq supported the formation of parliamentary committee on national security and said that the government should have a roadmap on the matter with the support of all political parties.
