AMMAN: The Special Representative of the German Federal Government for the Middle East Stability Partnership, Joachim Rucker, said the German government has agreed to provide more financial commitments to Jordan worth 46 million euros, putting the total value of financial pledges made by the German government for Jordan in 2016 at 471.7 million euros.
In a press conference held on Tuesday, Rucker said 8 million of the 46 million euros, make a grant to improve the water supply and sanitation of the host communities of Syrian refugees. An amount of 10 million euros, he added, will be granted for constructing new public schools and classrooms; 17 million euros for UNICEF program to avoid the loss of generations in Jordan, and 11 million euros for a program to support emerging companies and small and medium enterpises.
He noted that after his meeting with the Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Imad Fakhoury, two agreements in the water sector were signed, pointing out that Germany is keen to implement the London Conference commitments for Jordan.
The German official underlined that his country has worked hard at the European level in order to liberalize the Jordanian trade with the European Union (EU) and ease the European rules of origin, which constitute an important step to stimulate trade, investment and the overall economic development in Jordan.
He emphasized that easing the European rules of origin was an important step to stimulate Jordan's economy and provide more job opportunities for Jordanians, as well as for Syrian refugees.
Facilitating trade with the EU will increase Jordan's attractiveness to foreign investments, Rucker concluded.
