The rupee maintained a firm posture versus the dollar in the interbank market on Monday, retaining its weekend's level versus the US currency for buying and selling at 59.62 and 59.64, dealers said. Nothing was unusual in the market as there were no big demand from any quarter in the absence of corporate demand and closure of the overseas markets on Sunday due to weekly holiday.
Secondly, smooth supply of dollars was also a big factor behind the firmer trend in the currency market these days, dealers said.
In the international markets, the dollar moved down versus the major currencies, dealers said.
OPEN MARKET RATES: The rupee gained five paisa versus the dollar for buying at 60.40 while it maintained the selling level at 60.50, respectively.
The rupee did not show any change for buying and selling versus the euro for buying and selling at Rs 59.62 and Rs 59.64, dealers said.

RUPEE IN LAHORE: The Pak rupee opened the week on a positive note, as it appreciated its worth by five-paisa in relation to the greenback in the local currency markets.
According to the currency dealers, the dollar's trading commenced at Saturday's closing rates of Rs 60.40 and Rs 60.50 on buying and selling counters, respectively. These rates could not sustain due to lacking buying support. The dollar marginally moved down and closed at Rs 60.35 and Rs 60.45 on buying and selling sides, respectively, the dealers added.
However, the local currency failed to maintain its previous week rising trend and marginally declined its worth against the pound sterling. The British pound was purchased at Rs 105.50 and was sold at Rs 105.90 as compared to Rs 105.40 and Rs 105.80 of Saturday, the dealers added.
RUPEE IN ISLAMABAD AND RAWALPINDI: The rupee remained firm against the dollar at the open currency markets of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Monday.
The dollar opened at Rs 60.45 (buying) and Rs 60.55 (selling) against same last rate. It did not observe any further change in the evening spell and closed at Rs 60.45 (buying) and Rs 60.55 (selling). Pound sterling opened at Rs 105.10 (buying) and Rs 105.60 (selling) against last rate of Rs 104.90 (buying) and Rs 105.20 (selling). It did not observe any further change and closed at Rs 105.10 (buying) and Rs 105.60 (selling).
