Five policemen were arrested for failing to prevent two car bombs being planted near the US consul general's residence in a high security area of Karachi, police said on Friday.
The officers were supposed to be manning a checkpoint controlling vehicles coming into the usually well-guarded street, which houses the US diplomat's residence and the non-affiliated Pakistan-American Cultural Center.
"We have arrested the five policemen for committing negligence in their duties as they failed to avert the act of terrorism," police officer Wasif Qureshi told AFP.
Footage from security cameras installed in the street showed two men placing an object on the roof of one of the cars, a senior investigator said.
"We have got some important clues showing the two suspects riding a motorcycle and sticking something on one of the two cars which later exploded," the investigator told AFP, asking not to be named. The two men may be those who snatched one of the cars at gunpoint from a nearby market two hours before the attack.
Police have issued sketches based on the car owner's account of the car-snatching.
