The Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (Smeda) will undertake special measures to upgrade the PVC pipe industry in Pakistan.
According to a spokesman of the Authority, a proposal in this regard was discussed in a meeting with a delegation of the All Pakistan PVC Pipe Manufacturing Association (APPMA) here at Smeda head office.
Chaudhry Muhammad Nawaz, Chairman of the Association was leading the delegation, which included Hamayun Shareef former Chairman and a number of the Executive Committee Members of APPMA.
Asad Zahoor, Manager Sector Analysis and Strategy Department briefed Chief Executive Officer Smeda about the current status of the industry in a presentation.
The presentation revealed that the industry had an obsolete technological base as 75 percent units were equipped with the local single screw type machinery.
Whereas, rest of the 25 percent units were using twin screw type re-furnished old machinery of early 70 models imported from Western Europe.
The ratio of the units having modern machines imported from Korea or Germany was meagre.
The APPMA leaders demanded reduction in duty on import of machinery and raw materials for their industry with a special financial package for up-gradation and the working capital.
