An accountability court on Monday reserved its verdict in an application filed by former federal minister Jehangir Badr with the prayer to call Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as prosecution witness in a reference against him.
The applicant contended that since the respondent NAB Chairman has submitted a reference against him, therefore, he must be called as prosecutor witness.
The court, after hearing petitioner's counsel at length, reserved its verdict. The court would announce the decision on March 20.
The accused is facing the charges of corruption and making illegal assets in excess of his income. He is also facing the charges of misusing his office as federal minister.
AHMED MUKHTAR: Meanwhile, another accountability court adjourned for next week, the proceedings in a reference against former federal minister Ahmed Mukhtar after recording the statement of a prosecution witness Aziz Ahmed.
The counsel of the accused will cross-examine the prosecution witness on next date of hearing.
The accused is facing the charges of allotting textile quota to his favourites in violation of rules and regulations.
HEARING ADJOURNED: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday adjourned to March 16, the proceedings in a petition filed by former chairman Zila Council Lahore, Chaudhry Shaukat Ali, praying to the court to allow him to surrender before the court.
The LHC's office, raising objection over the petition, observed that the applicant should first surrender before the court. The petitioner's counsel requested for placing the petition as objection case. Accordingly, the case was placed before the court as objection case and court adjourned the proceedings for March 16 for further hearing.
The applicant is absconder in a reference against him on the charges of misappropriation of Zila Council funds.
He has also been facing the charges of misusing his office as Chairman Zila Council.
HEARING PUT OFF IN ARIF'S PETITION: The court also put off to March 16, the proceedings in an appeal filed by former vice-chairman Punjab Bar Council (PBC) Arif Chaudhry challenging cancellation of his membership of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA).
The LHCBA had cancelled Arif's membership for working against the interests of the lawyers' community in his capacity as vice-chairman PBC. The applicant contended that he being vice-chairman of the council sincerely worked for the welfare of the lawyers' community and also obtained huge funds from the government.
He submitted that the bar in its ordinary meeting could not cancel membership of any member. He, therefore, prayed to the court to declare the decision in question of the LHCBA as illegal and unconstitutional.
