Speakers at a Community Education Programme, while expressing their grave concern over increasing cases of epilepsy, have called for chalking out a comprehensive strategy to check the factors responsible for spread of disease.
Describing post birth complications and head injuries as the most common causes of the disease, they stressed the need for creating awareness among people so that surge in cases of disease could be checked.
Department of Psychiatry, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital/Fatima Jinnah Medical College (FJMC), in collaboration with NGOs, First Liberated Action Movement Against Epilepsy (FLAME), International Bureau of Epilepsy (IBE), World Psychiatric Association (WPA) organised the programme here on Saturday.
Senior politician Sardar Nasrullah Khan Dreshak MNA presided over while Mohtarma Farzana Nazir, Parliamentary Secretary Punjab, Dr Ameena Leghari MNA, singer-cum-social worker Surraya Khanum were special guests.
Experts from different institutes including Dr Umair Chaudhry, Dr Tahir Pervaiz, Dr Pervaiz Ahmad, Dr Saleem Ahmad, Dr Saqib Kilyani highlighted epilepsy-related issues.
Professor Dr Haroon Rashid Chaudhry highlighted various activities carried out his team for the welfare and rehabilitation of epilepsy patients. He said that those, facing epilepsy, should be called 'patient with epilepsy instead of epileptic patient'.
Sardar Nasrullah Dreshak praised Professor Haroon for working for the rehabilitation of mentally ill people. He assured all help to Professor Haroon and his team in their noble work for the betterment of those facing mental disorders.
Mohtarma Farzana Nazir also lauded the services of Department of Psychiatry FJMC.
A painting exhibition by epileptic patients was also held. A large number of patients with epilepsy and their families attended the programme.
