imageMilk considered one of the super foods, and why not few can match the health benefits that it holds.

Now, a new study suggests that milk contains a vitamin with several health benefits i.e. it can lower blood sugar levels, reduce fatty liver, and prevent peripheral nerve damage in pre-diabetes and type-2 diabetes.

This super vitamin, called nicotinamide riboside (NR), is a vitamin precursor of NAD+, an important cellular metabolite. That is required by cells to convert fuel into energy.

According to Express, the latest study published in the journal Scientific Reports test the effects of this vitamin-NR supplements in mice with pre-diabetes and type-2 diabetes. The research analyzed mice with pre-diabetes and with type 2 diabetes, which were fed a high-fat diet with or without the supplement along with a control group, fed a normal diet with or without the supplement.

The study confirmed that the supplement greatly protected the pre-diabetic and type 2 mice from weight gain due to the high-fat diet.

"There is a real fascination right now in the world of personalized nutrition, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical research to find strategies to boost NAD+ levels,” said Professor Dr Charles Brenner of the University Of Iowa Carver College Of Medicine.

"NR has emerged as the lead molecule to elevate NAD+ metabolites."

The study revealed that the supplement had other beneficial effects; it also reduced liver damage in the mice on high-fat diets, and greatly improved blood sugar levels in the"diabetic" mice.

"We have successfully addressed mouse models of pre-diabetes and type-2 diabetes with the naturally occurring vitamin NR. What we have seen to date in mice justifies clinical testing of NR in overweight adults and adults with diabetes," added Prof Brenner.
