imageISLAMABAD: State Minister for Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Saira Afzal Tarar on Tuesday said the government would speed up efforts to protect creative work and intellectual property rights of professionals in business and industry.

She was addressing a seminar in connection with annual World Intellectual Property Day organized by Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) here.

Theme of the day was "Digital Creativity: Culture Reimagined".

The minister appreciated the work done by Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) and for becoming a self-sufficient organization by providing valuable services.

She expressed the hope that close cooperation would continue among public and private stakeholders to protect intellectual property rights.

A lot more needs to be done to protect rights of creative people and products in diverse fields, she stressed.

"We are in active collaboration with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to strengthen measures against counterfeiting and violation of intellectual property rights."

"We should promote soft image of Pakistan and ensure financial benefits and resolve problems of people involved in creating new products and designs."

She urged that quality should not be compromised in the process of creativity and innovation.

The minister said Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) and IPO are collaborating closely on registration of new drugs and pharmaceutical products.

European Union ambassador to Pakistan Jean-Fran?ois Cautain said since his visit to Pakistan many years ago, the country has transformed.

Pakistan has a large young population and carries great potential for economic progress, adding Pakistan should better utilize the talent and energies of the young population.

Major exports of Pakistan are textiles and now it should move towards becoming a major player in the information technology and digital technologies, Cautain added.

Director General IPO Pakistan Shahid Latif said his organization was committed to provide intellectual property right services to different segments of the business and industry.

He said innovation and creativity are hallmarks of a society that is growing economically and socially.
